T&K Seafood occupies a creaky old three story townhouse along Chinatown's Yaowarat Road. Diners come here for the atmosphere just as much as the food. Seemingly chaotic nightly scenes see waiters darting up the narrow staircases and weaving around the long metal tables that are set up along the street, while cooks scramble around the outdoor kitchen flipping seafood over barbecues.

Don't be fooled though. T&K Seafood is a well oiled machine that cranks out a staggering number of seafood dishes a night. In an effort to be efficient, an outdoor pulley system has been employed to quickly rush dishes up to the third floor during peak dining.

Get there early if you want a table or be prepared to salivate as you line up along the edge of the seafood barbecues. It's easily identifiable by the army of workers with green polo shirts and shouldn't be confused with the red-shirted seafood joint just a few doors down, a fierce rivalry with both vying for the crown of Yaowarat's best seafood.

Inside, while still chaotic, it's brightly lit and enjoys Arctic-like temperatures from the air-conditioning - a welcome break from the humid Bangkok nights. The clattering of the metal tables that spill out across the pavement and onto the road sit among passing pedestrians and honking tuk tuks has more atmosphere.

Sky's the limit here when it comes down to budget. Dishes start from around 100 THB (US $3.15), but can be 500+ THB (US $16+) for plates of crab. It's reasonable value for seafood in Bangkok.

What to order

The menu at T&K Seafood is large. If it lives in the ocean, it's probably on the menu here. Notable highlights include the mild but flavourful crab meat curry, the sizzling oyster omelette and fairly good rendition of goong ob woonsen, glass noodles baked with soy sauce and river prawns.

For simplicity, it's always worth opting for several plates of the barbecued seafood, whether it's the prawns, squid or blood clams all of which are tied together by Thai seafood sauce - a riotous blend of hot chillies, Thai basil, palm sugar, lime juice and fish sauce.

If fresh oysters are your thing, this isn't a bad place to try them Thai-style with sweet chilli jam, deep-fried shallots and herbs. And a bowl of the perfectly balanced tom yum goong soup is best served between a group.

Accompanying sides, like stir-fried morning glory and fried rice, are perfectly serviceable but are clearly overshadowed by the seafood and not worth the journey alone.
