The rice salad yam naem khao tod is little known outside of Thailand, probably because it can often be a tad unexciting. But when it's done right, and it is at P’Aor Yam Naem Khao Tod, it can make for a nourishing lunch.
It starts with a base of fried rice balls blended with red curry paste, kaffir lime leaves and fish sauce. The cooked balls are crumbled apart and tossed with roasted peanuts, naem fermented pork sausage), sawtooth herb, spring onions, fish sauce and lime juice. It's a crispy, fragrant, slightly sour yet salty plate that's well worth the effort to find it. Just watch out for the dried red chillies if you can't stand the heat.
The small metal pushcart stall sets up along Nakhon Chaisi Road everyday between Tuesday and Sunday. Be warned they do close for several hours throughout the day while the next family member takes over. Your best bet here is in the afternoon after the lunchtime rush, sometime between 2pm and 5pm. There's no seating, so everything's bagged up to takeaway.
A plate of yam naem khao tod is between 30-40 THB (around US $0.91-1.25).
