While it's hardly street food, it's impossible to skip Mit Ko Yuan, a little shophouse in Bangkok's old town, a place that's been cooking up the good stuff since 1966. It hasn't changed an inch, even the original hand-wall written wall menu still displays the same dishes (though the prices have updated over the last half century).

Without a doubt, Mit Ko Yuan's signature is their tom yum goong, the classic hot and sour prawn soup that's ubiquitous in Thailand but often underwhelming. Not so here where the powerful, aromatic flavours of lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves and galangal ginger are ever present and the quality medium-sized river prawns are slightly undercooked and not rubbery, a persistent problem with most tom yums.

Regardless of the excellent menu here, the shophouse is worth a visit alone. This tiny time warp is a simple space - white tile-clad walls covered with framed articles of old Bangkok, a couple of rows of mid-century turquoise-topped wooden tables and a scattering of antiques. With such a fiercely competitive food scene in the city and seriously discerning Bangkokians (every one is a food critic), places simply don't survive half a century unless they're doing something right.

On weekdays they open between 11am and 2pm, close for a couple of hours reopening between 4pm and 10pm. On weekends they open in the latter half of the day only. It's a popular spot so queuing is quite normal at any time, but you give yourself a better chance by avoiding peak lunch and dinner hours.

Prices here are reflective of the quality of the ingredients, that is to say a little more expensive than average. A bowl of tom yum goong soup is 100 THB (just over US $3). It's well worth the extra spend.

What to order

Come to Mit Ko Yuan for the tom yum goong soup, one of the best in Bangkok. That said, there are other excellent dishes on the extensive menu. The pad kana moo krob, a stir fry of crispy pork belly and kale in oyster sauce, soy sauce and garlic, is a hit. As is the hoy lai pad prik pao, clams in a roasted chilli sauce. And if you're going to try blood clams with spicy nam jim seafood (a spicy sauce of Thai chillies, garlic, lime juice and fish sauce), this is a good place to to order them.Β
