For a place that specialises in fish, Khao Tom Pla Kimpo is placed perfectly just a stone's throw from Bangkok's largest fish market. The freshest seafood sourced daily from the market is perhaps the secret to their success over three generations of owners.
As their name suggests, the signature here is the khao tom pla, purposely overcooked rice served in the starchy, sweet and slightly peppery fish bone broth it's cooked in along with chunks of lightly poached butterfish, sea bass and grouper, or seafood like plump little oysters, squid and prawns. Pick and choose as you wish.
Don't just take our word for it though. Michelin think so too bestowing the little hole-in-the-wall joint a Michelin Plate award several years in a row. Better still, take a cue from the hungry locals that start descending every evening from 5pm and join the crowd.
The overly-bright shophouse eatery with enough fluorescent strip lights to give you a better tan than Bangkok's sun is functional, comfortable and easy to spot. If the bright white interior against the dark street isn't enough for it to stand out, look out for the large model grouper fish hanging above the outdoor kitchen and trays of seafood at its entrance. Be sure to take a look at what's on offer on your way in.
The quality here is reflected in the price with bowls of seafood rice soup starting at 150 THB (around US $4.60) and getting considerably more expensive depending on the amount of seafood.
